I have just moved into an area with a high density of thrift shops (known here as "opportunity shops"). A large Salvation Army store is now within walking distance. Sadly, electrical items were recently banned from both donation and sale due to safety laws (I have found some near-new electrical goods in the past). Most of the good stuff seems to be picked over before it even gets to the store - donations are piled up outside the shop. Used to be good for books. Now, I occasionally buy clothes - the shops only take the best (rejected clothes are recycled), they are all dry-cleaned and fairly cheap.

Auctions are often good for cheap things, but you have to watch out for the second-hand dealers.

Me and my mother used to go to this thrift store at night. They had an unattended drop off area..we found lots of furniture..I didnt feel guilty about taking the furniture as it was a privately owned thrift shop not for a charity, and they would have sold the furniture for way to much..

yep. I havnt ever found anything good like that. I bought a few books the other day, a Dr. Seuss t-shirt and that was it. I cannot believe there are no school uniforms for my baby that is the one thing I need to find.

If I go out looking for any one thing I can never find them. A lot of times to I will see something when I am not lookig for it but then later when I want it I kick myself in the butt because I can't find it!!! I don't really look for clothes so I don't even know where to have you check. I think goodwill keeps the things in the same neighborhood they were donated so keep checking around schools that have uniforms.
