Your Coolest Finds

Cruising Datura's page, upon seeing thriftstoreart.com [thriftstoreart.com] , I was reminded of my coolest find. A neato painting in primary colors - pretty big, done (looks like in the early 80s by the style - big bold swipes of color across a white canvas) by a Daniela Baldoni for "School Art Festival - Capitol Court" in grade 11. Titled: Man's Best Friend. Based on the tag afixed to the back. I get a huge smile every time I look at it.

Original question(prior to updating this entry): What's the coolest thing you found at a thrift shop or garage sale?

I bought 3 obviously amateur oil paintings for $1 each at an estate sale. One is a fey Valentino lookalike with a huge hat encircled in pompoms. One is a slightly pissed-off looking Asian woman who reminds me of the Gaugin painting called "Why Are You Angry?" The third is a circus scene, an acrobat is reading a letter that must contain bad news from home.
The paintings aren't badly done, but they're not great either--but I adore them, and they've been in my living room for years & years.

Sounds great - I never even thought of finding paintings, when I found mine. I was thinking, Oh, a coffee pot or chairs or clothes or something. Who knew...

I always find circus stuff depressing - don't know why. Ever figure out why Gaugin-esque chick was angry??

She's wearing an ugly green kimono, and her shoulders are freakishly narrow. Reason enough for crankiness.
I usually loathe circus stuff, particularly clowns (gee, how unusual)--but the acrobat trancends the usual circus kitsch. I think anything one-dimensional annoys me, but this painting has many facets to it. Maybe I'll try to photograph it one day & post on my site.
I think the unexpectedness is part of the joy of discovery. The whole estate was amazing--beaded 1920's dresses & other clothing, jewelry--but it was crowded and a little pricey (for the "good stuff", obviously not my paintings) so I didn't get much. I owned a vintage clothing business at the time & was looking for goodies for the shop--fortunately I didn't rule out picking up stuff for myself.

that estate sale sounds like a hoot! Ugly green would piss me off, too. ;)
